Geknipst: Where did you work at?

Shirdonya Mitchell: I was doing heating and air conditioning. You know, when your AC goes out I was one of the persons who would come and fix it. Change the unit, and make sure that there is cold air and hot air. I was one of the persons that actually fixed it. So that's what I have been doing all through college.

Geknipst: So when, would you say, did your career really start?

Shirdonya Mitchell: When, my career started as far as football... I think, I made football my career my junior year in college. That’s when I decided “You know what, I have the opportunity to go to the next level with this, so I’mma see and I am gonna put all my might and effort in it and see how it goes”. And so far it’s working out.

Geknipst: And what was for you personally the most important success?

Shirdonya Mitchell: My most important success... I might say, just supporting my family, just having enough money to survive. I’m not really trying to be rich, just live a good life. And just, you know, have security in life. And once you have that, I think, you’ll be fine. I really don’t worry too much about life.

Geknipst: And your most important success concerning football?

Shirdonya Mitchell: I would say, playing the league probably seven or eight years, make a name for myself by a couple of records somehow. And actually playing till I can’t play no more. But I am shooting for seven years in the league. I’m shooting for seven years staying in the league. That’s pretty much it, really.

Geknipst: How many injuries do usually occur during training?

Shirdonya Mitchell: Oh man! It’s a lot of injuries. I consider injuries something that is considered serious. Maybe like a sprained ankle or ACL, or a shoulder dislocation. Well further than that, it’s always injuries: Toes, fingers, concussions, hands. It’s a lot of injuries. But I really don’t have to many injuries though.
ACL = A cruciate ligament of each knee that is attached in front to the more medial aspect of the tibia, that passes upward, backward, and laterally through the middle of the knee crossing the posterior cruciate ligament to attach to the femur, that functions to prevent hyperextension of the knee and to keep the femur from sliding backward in relation to the tibia, and that is subject to sports injury especially by tearingcalled also ACL

Draft = (Sports) A selecting or drawing of new players from a choice group of amateur players by professional teams, esp. a system of selecting new players so that each team in a professional league receives some of the most promising players.

Geknipst: But what was the worst one you ever had?

Shirdonya Mitchell: My worst one, I would say, coming out of college on my pro day: I tore my ACL in my right knee. And a pro day is where all the graduating seniors and all the NFL scouts come to your school and work you out. It’s like a try-out for the NFL. And I was pretty much in one of the categories to go high in the draft and I tore my knee up and, you know, my draft dropped a lot. But I was still fortunate to be picked out by Miami. So that’s one of the key injuries in my career so far.

Geknipst: How many games do you usually have within a year or a month?

Shirdonya Mitchell: 16 games in a season in the NFL. And it kinda depends. In a month you can play two games or three games - it all depends on the schedule. Each team has a different schedule. You will have weeks in which you don’t play and you got some months where you play every week. So it all depends on teams schedules.

Shirdonya Mitchell spricht über seine Freizeit

Geknipst: Do you still have spare time, and if so, what do you do then?

Shirdonya Mitchell: My spare time consists of sleeping. That’s what I do in my spare time - I sleep, trying to get my rest, trying to get my body back because football takes a lot of your energy and your muscles might be tired and you’d be fatigue so I try to drink a lot of water, get into the whirlpool, or the sauna. And if I am not sleeping I am pretty much playing the games. Or if I stay in Miami I walk on the beach. I walk around and do pretty much just have time for myself, just relaxing.
